GoPro Opens MISSION 1 Pre-Orders for 50MP RAW Compact Cameras

GoPro opened pre-orders for its new MISSION 1 camera line ahead of May 28 shipping, bringing a 50MP 1-inch sensor, GP3 processor, 50MP RAW photo capture, Open Gate video modes, and a coming Micro Four Thirds-compatible ILS model into a compact creator-camera system.

Overview

GoPro announced on May 21, 2026 that several products from its new MISSION 1 Series are available for pre-order, with shipping of pre-orders and global retail availability scheduled to begin May 28. The launch moves GoPro beyond a traditional action-camera refresh and into a compact camera system aimed at creators, filmmakers, and hybrid photo/video workflows.

The core line includes MISSION 1, MISSION 1 PRO, and MISSION 1 PRO Grip Edition at launch. GoPro is also preparing a broader accessory ecosystem, including a point-and-shoot grip, ND filters, Enduro 2 batteries, protective housing, lighting, audio, and media accessories.

Sensor and RAW Capture

The MISSION 1 Series is built around a new 50MP 1-inch sensor and GoPro's GP3 processor. GoPro says the MISSION 1 PRO supports 50MP RAW photo capture, 8K60 and 4K240 16:9 video, and 8K30 and 4K120 Open Gate 4:3 video.

The standard MISSION 1 keeps the same 50MP photo capture and sensor platform, but limits the upper video modes compared with MISSION 1 PRO. That keeps the lineup relevant to still-image users as well as video creators, because the lower model is not presented as a lower-resolution photo camera.

Models and Shipping

GoPro lists MISSION 1 at $599.99 MSRP, MISSION 1 PRO at $699.99 MSRP, and MISSION 1 PRO Grip Edition at $779.99 MSRP, with lower GoPro.com pricing for existing GoPro subscribers. The May 21 announcement says MISSION 1, MISSION 1 PRO, and MISSION 1 PRO Grip Edition begin shipping May 28.

The Grip Edition bundles the flagship camera with a grip that can work as a handheld point-and-shoot-style handle or convert into a protective metal cage. GoPro describes the grip as suited to street, travel, and everyday capture, which is a notable framing for a company best known for action and mounted-camera use.

Interchangeable-Lens Model

The most unusual model is MISSION 1 PRO ILS, which GoPro says will be available in Q3 2026. It uses the same 50MP 1-inch sensor and GP3 processor as MISSION 1 PRO, but in a mirrorless-style body with an interchangeable lens mount compatible with Micro Four Thirds lenses and adapters.

GoPro says the ILS model also supports in-camera HyperSmooth video stabilization with rectilinear prime focal length lenses. If the model reaches the market as described, it gives GoPro users a path from fixed wide-angle action capture into telephoto, macro, zoom, and other lens-driven workflows.

Why It Matters

For PhotoTools readers, the important signal is that compact capture devices are producing larger, more flexible files. A 50MP RAW still may start in camera software, but the delivery version often becomes a JPG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF file that needs resizing, compression, metadata review, or watermarking before sharing.

The MISSION 1 line also shows how photo and video workflows keep merging. Cameras built for action, travel, and creator work now generate high-resolution stills, vertical and horizontal media, accessory-driven lighting and audio setups, and files that may need quick browser-based preparation before upload.
