When to convert AVIF to PNG

PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which makes it the right intermediate format for editing, layering and graphic-design work. AVIF also supports both, but many editing tools, design pipelines and platforms still expect PNG as the input format.

Common situations: importing an AVIF icon into Figma or Photoshop, prepping an AVIF screenshot for annotation, supplying a logo to a designer who works in PNG, or sending an asset to a site that does not accept AVIF.

Preserving AVIF transparency in PNG

AVIF transparency maps directly to PNG alpha channels with no data loss. Transparent backgrounds carry over intact, which is the main reason to pick PNG over JPG when converting an AVIF.

For icons, logos and screenshots with transparent corners, the PNG output behaves exactly like a PNG that was authored natively. You can layer it on any background colour without seeing a fringe or fill.

File size expectations

AVIF compresses much better than PNG for almost all content. Converting AVIF to PNG will usually produce a larger file, often several times bigger, especially for photographic content.

If file size is a constraint, keep the AVIF for sharing and use the PNG only where it is required (editing, design import, platforms that reject AVIF). For a different size/quality trade-off, AVIF-to-JPG produces smaller files but loses transparency.
