When to convert HEIC to PNG

How HEIC decoding works in the browser

HEIC is not natively supported by every browser, so the tool uses the heic2any library to decode HEIC and HEIF in JavaScript inside your tab. The decoded image is then encoded as a lossless PNG using the browser Canvas API.

No Apple software, iCloud account or Apple ID is required. Multi-frame HEIC files such as Live Photos expand into individual frame cards so you can pick the exact moment to keep.

HEIC to PNG vs HEIC to JPG

Pick PNG when you plan to edit the iPhone photo. PNG is lossless, so every subsequent save preserves quality. It also supports transparency for layering, which matters if you build composites on top of the photo.

Pick JPG when you plan to share, upload, or archive the photo without editing. JPG is much smaller than PNG and visually indistinguishable from the HEIC at 90% quality. For most casual workflows JPG is the right pick; PNG is for design and editing pipelines.

iPhone screenshots and Live Photos

iPhone screenshots saved as HEIC convert to PNG the same way as photos. PNG is often the better choice for screenshots because UI text and sharp edges look crisper without lossy compression.
