Tool
Convert PNG to AVIF - Free Online
Drop PNG files, export AVIF copies that are much smaller and still support transparency.
What this tool does
Convert PNG to AVIF in your browser. AVIF keeps transparency and produces dramatically smaller files than PNG. Adjust quality, batch-convert and download as a ZIP.
Private browser-based processing
Your images are processed locally in your browser. Files are not uploaded to PhotoTools.org servers, and the finished result is generated on your device.
When to convert PNG to AVIF
AVIF is often dramatically smaller than PNG for the same content, especially for photographic or detailed images. PNG-to-AVIF is one of the highest-leverage image optimisations for the modern web: it can cut a 1.5 MB PNG screenshot down to 100 KB or less without losing transparency.
Common situations: optimising screenshots for a docs site, shrinking PNG icons for a CDN, preparing transparent assets for a design system, or making a static site faster on modern browsers.
How much smaller is the AVIF?
For graphics with flat regions and few colours (icons, logos, simple charts), expect 50-70% reduction. For photographs saved as PNG or for screenshots with mixed content, 80-90% reduction is common.
The exact ratio depends on the source content and the quality setting. Lossless AVIF is usually 40-60% smaller than the PNG; lossy AVIF at 80% quality is much smaller again with little visible difference.
Preserving PNG transparency
AVIF supports alpha channels, so PNG transparency carries over intact. Transparent corners, soft shadows and partial transparency all preserve through the conversion.
This is the key advantage over PNG-to-JPG. JPG flattens transparency to a solid colour; AVIF keeps it. For icons, logos, screenshots and any layered design asset, PNG-to-AVIF is the right choice when you need both major size savings and transparency.
How the conversion works in your browser
The tool decodes the PNG using the browser Canvas API and re-encodes it as an AVIF with your chosen quality. Both decoding and encoding run on your device using native browser APIs; nothing is uploaded.
PNG-8, PNG-24 and PNG-32 inputs all work, including PNGs with alpha and interlacing. The output is a standard AVIF that works everywhere AVIF is supported.
Batch convert and ZIP download
A folder of PNGs can be dropped in at once. Each becomes a card showing the original PNG size and the converted AVIF size, so you can see the savings file by file. Click Convert all to process the batch in a single pass.
When the batch finishes the bottom bar offers a ZIP download containing every AVIF. This is the fastest way to move an optimised image folder into a deploy, a CDN or a static-site build.
Frequently asked questions
Why convert PNG to AVIF?
AVIF delivers a major file-size reduction over PNG while still supporting transparency. Ideal for icons, screenshots and graphics on modern websites.
Will AVIF preserve PNG transparency?
Yes. Transparent backgrounds are kept intact in the AVIF output.
How much smaller will the AVIF be?
For graphics with flat regions, expect 50-70% savings. For photos saved as PNG, 80-90% reduction is common.
Can I batch-convert many PNGs at once?
Yes. Drop a folder of PNGs, convert all and download as a ZIP.
