Convert PNG to WebP - Free Online

Drop PNG files, export WebP copies that are smaller and still support transparency.

What this tool does

Convert PNG to WebP in your browser. WebP keeps transparency and produces much smaller files than PNG. Adjust quality, batch-convert and download as a ZIP.

Private browser-based processing

Your images are processed locally in your browser. Files are not uploaded to PhotoTools.org servers, and the finished result is generated on your device.

When to convert PNG to WebP

WebP is often dramatically smaller than PNG for the same content, especially for photographic or detailed images. PNG-to-WebP is one of the highest-leverage image optimisations for the web: it can cut a 1.2 MB PNG screenshot down to 200 KB or less without losing transparency.

Common situations: optimising screenshots for a docs site, shrinking PNG icons for a CDN, preparing transparent assets for a design system, or making a static site faster.

How much smaller is the WebP?

For graphics with flat regions and few colours (icons, logos, simple charts), expect 30-50% reduction. For photographs saved as PNG or for screenshots with mixed content, 70-90% reduction is common.

The exact ratio depends on the source content and the quality setting. Lossless WebP is usually 25-50% smaller than the PNG; lossy WebP at 80% quality is much smaller again with little visible difference.

Preserving PNG transparency

WebP supports alpha channels, so PNG transparency carries over intact. Transparent corners, soft shadows and partial transparency all preserve through the conversion.

This is the key advantage over PNG-to-JPG. JPG flattens transparency to a solid colour; WebP keeps it. For icons, logos, screenshots and any layered design asset, PNG-to-WebP is the right choice when you need both size savings and transparency.

How the conversion works in your browser

The tool decodes the PNG using the browser Canvas API and re-encodes it as a WebP with your chosen quality. Both decoding and encoding run on your device using native browser APIs; nothing is uploaded.

PNG-8, PNG-24 and PNG-32 inputs all work, including PNGs with alpha and interlacing. The output is a standard WebP that works everywhere WebP is supported.

Batch convert and ZIP download

A folder of PNGs can be dropped in at once. Each becomes a card showing the original PNG size and the converted WebP size, so you can see the savings file by file. Click Convert all to process the batch in a single pass.

When the batch finishes, the bottom bar offers a ZIP download containing every WebP. This is the fastest way to move an optimised image folder into a deploy, a CDN, or a static-site build.

Frequently asked questions

Why convert PNG to WebP?

WebP delivers a major file-size reduction over PNG while still supporting transparency. Ideal for icons, screenshots and graphics on the web.

Will WebP preserve PNG transparency?

Yes. Transparent backgrounds are kept intact in the WebP output.

How much smaller will the WebP be?

It varies. For graphics with flat regions you may see 30-50% savings. For photos already saved as PNG you may see 80% or more.

Can I batch-convert many PNGs at once?

Yes. Drop a folder of PNGs, convert all, and download as a ZIP.
