US Passport Photo Size and Layout Requirements

A standard US passport photo must be exactly 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm) in physical size. In addition, the head height from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head (including hair) must be between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches (25 mm to 35 mm). The photo must also be taken within the last 6 months to reflect your current appearance.

The photo background must be flat, solid white or off-white. There should be no shadows on your face or on the background. You must face the camera directly with a neutral facial expression or a natural, open-eyed smile. Both eyes must be visible.

No Glasses and Other US Dress Codes

Under US Department of State rules, you must remove your eyeglasses for passport photos. This is the most common reason passport photos are rejected. Exceptions are only made with a signed medical statement from a physician.

You should wear everyday clothing. Uniforms, clothing that looks like a uniform, and camouflage attire are not allowed. You cannot wear a hat or head covering unless it is for religious or medical purposes, and even then, your full face must remain visible with no shadows on your forehead.

How to Print US Passport Photos on 4x6 Paper

When printing, it is critical to select "Actual Size" or "100% Scale" in your print dialog. Disable "Fit to Page", "Shrink to Fit", or any other auto-scaling option. Otherwise, the printer will resize the sheet and your printed photos will not measure exactly 2 x 2 inches.
